Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (or turkey, if you prefer)
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup crushed crackers (use a bag to crush them easily)
- ½ cup onions, finely chopped
- 4 tbsp frozen butter, grated
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 burger buns
For the Burger Sauce:
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp mustard
- 1 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp relish
How to do it
- Sauté the onions: In a pan over medium heat, sauté the chopped onions until they’re soft and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Set aside to cool slightly.
- Prepare the burger mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, crushed crackers, sautéed onions, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well.
- Grate the butter: Grate the frozen butter into the meat mixture and mix until everything is well incorporated. This will make the burgers extra juicy and flavorful.
- Shape the patties: Roll the mixture into balls, about the size of a golf ball, and place them on a lined baking sheet. Cover with another liner, then gently smash them down into patties.
- Cook the burgers: Heat a flat-top griddle or a pan over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3 minutes on each side, or until crispy and browned on the outside and cooked through.
- Make the burger sauce: While the burgers cook, mix the ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, and relish in a small bowl to make the sauce.
- Assemble the burgers: Once the patties are cooked, toast your buns lightly. Spread the burger sauce on both the top and bottom of the buns. Place the cooked patties on the buns and serve immediately.
Notes
- These smash burgers are best served hot, right off the griddle.
- Feel free to add your favorite toppings like cheese, lettuce, or tomato.
- For a bit of crunch, you can also add pickles or crispy onions to the burger.
